A video shared online has captured an incident where an NYPD SUV is seen driving aggressively towards a moped on the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens, leading many viewers to speculate that the police were attempting to intentionally collide with the two-wheeler.
The footage, which was posted on the Reddit group NYStateofMind on Wednesday, shows the police vehicle making what appears to be multiple deliberate maneuvers to come into contact with the black moped.
At the beginning of the video, the moped is positioned on the left shoulder of the highway, while the NYPD SUV is located just to the right. As the moped changes lanes, the SUV follows suit, maintaining proximity to the moped. Subsequently, both vehicles cross back over in the opposite direction.
“Look at this guy! Look at him!” a woman exclaims in the recording. “Oh, my God. He’s trying to hit him.”
As the moped crosses the lanes once again, the SUV jerks in the driver’s direction — coming within inches of the driver — prompting the woman to shout, “Oh, my God! Did you see that?”
Towards the conclusion of the video, the moped driver takes an exit using an off-ramp, while the NYPD vehicle continues on the highway without its lights activated at any point during the recorded incident.
While an NYPD spokesperson refrained from providing specific details about the event, they acknowledged the existence of the video and assured that a thorough review would be conducted.
The video was shared by a Reddit user known as MelBloccs, who informed the Daily News that the incident occurred near the 12A exit in Queens at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The footage was captured from the passenger seat of the user’s own vehicle, as mentioned by the individual. According to the user, there appeared to be no apparent reason for the aggressive behavior exhibited by the NYPD vehicle’s operator towards the moped driver.
