Kane Williamson: New Zealand batsman forced out of IPL by knee injury

Due to a knee injury, New Zealand’s captain for white-ball cricket, Kane Williamson, has been forced out of this season’s Indian Premier League.

He sustained the injury during defending champions Gujarat Titans’ first victory against Chennai Super Kings on Friday.

Williamson was trying to prevent a six near the boundary when he landed awkwardly and collapsed, holding his knee. It is uncertain if this injury will cause him to miss the ICC World Cup in India, scheduled for October.

“Preparations are now under way for him to return to NZ next week and be seen by relevant medical specialists to establish a treatment plan,” said New Zealand Cricket.

Gujarat director of cricket Vikram Solanki said a replacement would be announced in due course.

“It is sad to lose Kane to injury so early in the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery, with the hope of seeing him in action very soon,” he said.
