The Chinese port city of Qingdao plans to test nine million people in the coming five days

China plans to test 9 million individuals in Qingdao, a port city of skyscrapers, parks and beaches bordering the Yellow Sea, in the next 5 days, after 12 locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases were reported rising issues of a wider outbreak.

China has been largely Covid free since mid-August, with all cases registered by the nation imported from elsewhere. But as of October 11, Qingdao has registered more than 10 locally transmitted cases, all of which have been linked to a medical facility treating imported cases.

Mass testing has already been carried out at the Qingdao Chest Hospital, which has been placed on lockdown, with 114,862 people, staff and patients, having tested negative as of Monday.

Testing will now be rolled out across the city for the entire population of 9 million, repeating the type of mass response previously seen in Beijing & other cities across China where clusters of Covid-19 have been detected.
