Serena Williams pulled out of French Open with Achilles injury ahead of her match against Tsvetana Pironkova

39-year-old American professional tennis player and former world No. 1 in women’s single tennis Serena Williams has withdrawn from French Open with an Achilles injury before her booked second-round game against Tsvetana Pironkova. Williams wanted to succeed at a record-equaling 24th grand slam title at Roland Garros having arrived at the semifinals of the US Open prior this month.

She said the injury that happened in New York hadn’t recuperated adequately for her to contend in Paris. “I was able to get it somewhat better but just looking long-term at this tournament — ‘will I be able to get through enough matches?’ — and so for me I don’t think I could and struggling to walk so that’s kind of a telltale sign that I should try to recover,” she told reporters on Wednesday.
